Brussels, 27 June 2016 – In a letter to the Dutch EU Presidency and EU leaders, JRS Europe together with five other faith-based organisations calls on them to reject proposals which would make development aid conditional on migration control. Brussels, 17 September 2015 – JRS Europe calls on theextraordinary EU council meeting on 22 September to urgently take common action to protect refugees in Europe. Gaps in European nationality laws leave thousands of children stateless

Strasbourg – A new report published today by the European Network on Statelessness reveals that thousands of children are growing up without the basic protection a nationality offers to citizens because of gaps in nationality laws and laws governing procedures for birth registration. The report No Child Should be Stateless, which draws on extensive analysis of nationality laws in all 47 Council of Europe states, details a worrying array of problems and makes a series of recommendations designed to guide actions to address – and ultimately end – childhood statelessness in Europe. The European Council’s emergency meeting yesterday decided on four key measures to be taken in response to the human tragedies in the Mediterranean Sea. The EU leaders have asked Federica Mogherini, the EU High Representative, to propose action to capture and destroy the smugglers’ vessels before they can be used “in accordance with international law”. They called for efforts to combat smuggling networks in cooperation with Europol, and for the deployment of so called immigration officers to third countries.
