In 2014 there was an increase in the number of immigrants arriving by sea in Romania. Thus, 314 persons asked the Romanian state protection, many of them children and women from countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Somalia and Pakistan.

Brussels, 17 September 2015 – JRS Europe calls on theextraordinary EU council meeting on 22 September to urgently take common action to protect refugees in Europe. The last Council of Ministers meeting held in Brussels on 14 September failed to embrace the hospitality shown to asylum seekers by civil society and individuals over the past few weeks.

Gaps in European nationality laws leave thousands of children stateless

Strasbourg – A new report published today by the European Network on Statelessness reveals that thousands of children are growing up without the basic protection a nationality offers to citizens because of gaps in nationality laws and laws governing procedures for birth registration. The report No Child Should be Stateless, which draws on extensive analysis of nationality laws in all 47 Council of Europe states, details a worrying array of problems and makes a series of recommendations designed to guide actions to address – and ultimately end – childhood statelessness in Europe.

The Jesuit Refugee Service Romania (JRS Romania) and its colleague offices across Europe, lead by the central office of JRS Europe, today called upon the President of the European Union, Donald Tusk, to lead member states to agree on common humanitarian action on refugees in their meeting of 14 September. The letter signed by 13 JRS offices and two Jesuit partner agencies calls for EU political measures to back up the warm welcome civil societies have given to refugees across the continent.
