About Us

Accompanying refugees and migrants in Romania since 2000

Who we are

Who We Are

For 25 years, JRS Romania has stood by people forced to flee their homes – offering safety, dignity and hope when they need it most.

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Romania is a Romanian non-profit organization, established in accordance with Romanian law, Government Ordinance 26/2000, and its founding statute.

It is a private legal entity, non-profit, non-governmental, and non-political, with a humanitarian mission.
The organization is independent and operates on democratic principles.

Our Vision

We envision a Europe where human rights, protection, hospitality, integration and reconciliation are the foundation of inclusive and welcoming societies.

We are committed to a sustainable future in which education helps every person develop their potential through knowledge, creativity and critical thinking.

Together with communities, we take concrete action to address climate change, protect ecosystems and build a fair and liveable world for present and future generations.

We fight for education, regaining dignity for displaced people, and to alleviate climate change vulnerability.

Displaced persons

JRS is an international Catholic organization that defends fundamental human rights, with a special focus on displaced persons: refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and stateless people.

Every day, many of them face rejection, stigma and violence instead of safety and fairness. Your support helps us stand beside people who have lost their homes, their stability and often their trust in others. Through legal aid, counseling, material assistance and simple, steady presence, JRS becomes a small sign of hope and a first step toward healing.

We also go where help is scarce or missing. By adapting quickly to new crises and local realities, we keep shaping our protection work around the real needs of the communities we serve. With your partnership, we can reach more people who would otherwise remain unseen and unprotected.

Education

JRS is deeply committed to education as a basic human right and a powerful tool for rebuilding lives. We work with children, young people and adults, convinced that learning can restore confidence, open choices and break cycles of exclusion.

In contexts where access to school is unequal and opportunities are limited, your support allows us to offer language courses, catch-up classes, skills training and safe learning spaces. Our approach to education encourages curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, so that learners do more than memorize facts – they gain tools to shape their own future.

Together with our donors and partners, we help people overcome barriers to education and unlock their potential. Each scholarship, each classroom and each course you make possible strengthens not only individual lives, but also more just and inclusive communities.

Climate change

JRS is also engaged in responding to the growing impact of climate change on vulnerable communities. Environmental degradation, extreme weather and loss of livelihoods often force people to move, adding new layers of suffering to lives already marked by hardship.

As a Catholic organization, we seek to care for our common home while standing with those most affected. With your support, we work alongside communities to promote resilience, protect local ecosystems and develop practical responses that reduce risk and support recovery.

Our climate-related work connects protection, justice and hope. By backing these efforts, you help communities adapt with dignity, safeguard their environment and pass on a more liveable world to the next generation.
