Education empowers refugee families to rebuild their lives

JRS Romania helps refugee families integrate through Romanian language classes, educational support for children, and vocational training for adults. Education is the foundation for independence – for dignity, and hope.

Standing with refugees for 25 years and always will

Our Mission

We walk alongside refugees to rebuild their lives

JRS seeks to accompany, serve, and advocate the cause of refugees and other forcibly displaced people, that they may heal, learn and determine their own future

Who we are

JRS Romania is a non-profit organisation that has supported refugees and other forcibly displaced people in Romania since 2000. As part of the global Jesuit Refugee Service network active in 50+ countries, we help people find safety, rebuild their lives, and regain dignity. Our work spans education and language learning, housing and livelihoods, legal aid, medical and psychosocial care, and community integration – reaching over 100,000 people so far.

Critical needs unfunded

Some urgent needs remain uncovered.

Most humanitarian funding arrives late or covers only part of what’s needed. Your gift works faster. It fills the gaps immediately. Every euro goes directly to refugees and displaced people in need. The only deductions are small payment processing fees — we take nothing for administration. That’s what real change looks like.

Help Palestinian families settle safely in Romania

Palestinian families evacuated from Gaza can’t cover rent deposits, household basics, utilities, transport, or daily health-related costs. Your gift covers the simple but impossible costs and meets urgent everyday needs — so they can secure a stable home, their children can heal and return to school and rebuild their lives.

€45,000 Needed

Education & therapy for Ukrainian refugee children

Most Ukrainian refugee children with disabilities are refused by schools in Romania. There are no adapted programs or support in their language. Your donation funds what they actually need: personalized learning plans, therapy, parent coaching. So these children can communicate, learn, and have a school.

€90,000 Needed

An elderly refugee woman receives her prescribed medication from a JRS Romania staff member offering medical support at the center.

Health care for seniors in exile

Many elderly refugees live with diabetes, hypertension, chronic pain, and even cancer—without stable income or health insurance. They fled war and now struggle with expensive prescriptions and long journeys to doctors. Your donation covers medicines, medical tests, and home care supplies—the kind of care that can’t wait.

Emergency support for people in crisis

Emergency support for people in crisis

When a boat arrives with refugees, when a family is evacuated overnight, when someone escapes sexual violence or traffickinga, there is no time to wait. Your donation becomes immediate shelter, hot meals, safe transport, medical care, protection and legal support. Your gift turns panic into safety and gives people one simple message: you are safe now.

€20,000 Needed

A JRS Romania staff member offers a warm meal into the hands of a man with tolerated status, reminding him he is not invisible

Care and dignity for people with “tolerated status”

In our centre Pedro Arrupe, we host people who survived war, violence, or serious illness, and then ran out of options. They have “tolerated” status, no health insurance, and no stable income. Many live with disabilities, in a body that can’t wait for paperwork. Your donation covers medical checks, life-saving medication, psychosocial support and meals.

Support migrant workers in Romania

Migrant workers from Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and beyond keep Romania running, yet many endure overcrowded housing, long hours, broken contracts and abuse. Your gift offers what is missing: legal aid, safe shelter, translation and medical care—so they can stay safe, claim their rights and support their families with dignity.

Support Ukrainians in Romania and in Ukraine

Since the first days of the war, JRS Romania has been standing with Ukrainians on both sides of the border. In Romania, we provide housing support, education for children, language courses, legal assistance, psychosocial care, medical help, and safe spaces for families. Together with our JRS partners in Ukraine, we help internally displaced people with shelter, food, winter items, medicines, and protection in areas most affected by attacks.

Your gift means a child can stay in school, a family can keep a safe home, a sick or elderly person can get treatment, and people trapped in war can receive direct, concrete help.
